The board of Tata Sons has approved the creation of a Rs 500-crore charitable trust to give financial assistance to the families affected by the Air India crash in Ahmedabad last month. The trust is expected to be registered by the end of July and will likely be headed by Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran according to a Moneycontrol report citing sources. Tata’s Rs 500 Crore For Air India Plane Crash Victim Families Air India has been asked to start reaching out to the families of the victims to collect necessary documentation. “Air India has been asked to initiate contact with the affected families of flight AI 171 including those who lost loved ones and those injured so they can be onboarded to the newly established trust” a senior Air India executive told Moneycontrol. A Boeing 787 aircraft carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members crashed last month. 241 people aboard and 19 on the ground were killed leaving only one survivor. At least 60 others on the ground were injured. Former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was also confirmed dead after DNA testing. The extreme heat of the crash estimated to have reached 1500°C (2700°F) complicated DNA recovery and testing efforts. How Rs 500 crore Will Be Allocated? Rs 300 crore will be distributed among families of the deceased including passengers and BJ Medical College doctors.  Rs 50 crore will be used for the treatment of injured survivors mostly doctors and staff of BJ Medical College.  Rs 50 crore will be used for rebuilding the college’s hostel block.  Rs 100 crore will be reserved for the long-term needs of affected families.  The initiative will be spearheaded by P B Balaji Group CFO of Tata Motors known for his expertise in regulatory financial and governance matters. The board of trustees will include members from outside the Tata Group as well.
