Late Wednesday night in Surrey, British Columbia, gunfire was reported at Kap’s Cafe, newly owned by comedian Kapil Sharma and wife Ginni Chatrath. Located in a commercial complex, the cafe was hit by several shots. Fortunately, no one was injured, though the premises sustained damage. Authorities are treating the incident as a potential targeted attack.

Harjeet Singh Laddi, a most-wanted terrorist with ties to the banned Khalistani group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), has claimed responsibility. Laddi, listed by India’s NIA, reportedly singled out Kapil Sharma over a past remark. It remains unclear if the cafe was a direct target or intended as a threat to the comedian. Canadian authorities are investigating Laddi’s involvement and possible accomplices.

Laddi—also known as Harjit Singh—and associate Kulbeer Singh ("Sidhu") are accused of orchestrating multiple terror activities, including the April 13, 2024 assassination of VHP leader Prabhakar in Punjab’s Rupnagar district. India’s NIA has placed a ₹10 lakh bounty on Laddi. In 2023, Punjab Police dismantled a BKI cell in Ludhiana linked to Laddi, arresting four individuals for petrol bombing. This shooting is being viewed in the context of a broader pattern of cross-border extremist violence targeting prominent Indian-origin figures and enterprises abroad.

Authorities are also probing whether the Sharma family received threats or extortion demands prior to the attack. The shooting appears to be part of a recent wave of violence by Khalistani-linked gangs aimed at high-profile Indian-origin businesses overseas. Investigators are reviewing security footage, witness accounts, and any communications that may shed light on motive and planning. Kapil Sharma has not yet made a public comment.

The reopening night of Kap’s Cafe turned tense when gunshots shattered the celebration. With ties to BKI terrorism and possible extortion motives under review, investigators are zeroing in on whether this was a statement attack or a targeted threat against Kapil Sharma.
