Dust accumulation on blinds is a common issue during summer, as open windows allow more particles to enter our homes. Not many realise that without proper cleaning techniques, dust will continue to gather, especially since blinds are often made of materials like wood or plastic that attract static electricity.
However, the cleaning gurus at American Blinds have divulged a straightforward solution for keeping blinds dust-free using just two household items. They advise: "For wood, faux wood, mini and PVC blinds, we recommend you use dryer sheets to reduce static cling and help repel dust. For a deeper cleaning, wear an old pair of fabric gloves and run your fingers along the slats."
Dryer sheets, typically used to prevent clothes from sticking together in the tumble dryer due to their anti-static properties, can also be an effective cleaning aid. They leave behind a waxy layer that deters dust from settling on surfaces.
Cleaning each individual slat on blinds can be cumbersome, but donning a pair of gloves simplifies the process, allowing for a more efficient clean, reports the Express.
While it may seem unconventional, using dryer sheets and gloves is an easy method to prevent dust buildup and maintain an allergen-free home throughout the warmer months.
Utilise the damp glove to wipe away as much dust and grime as possible from each slat, continually rinsing the glove until your blinds are thoroughly clean.
Don the other glove and use it to dry each slat. Ensure your blinds are completely dry, as the dryer sheet technique will not be effective on a wet surface.
Once the blinds are clean, apply the dryer sheet onto the slats. You can also sweep it across the windowsill where dust often gathers.
Your window blinds should remain clean for up to a month, but they can stay dust-free for longer if you regularly vacuum a room and groom your pets to reduce dander.
If you have any air fresheners positioned near your window, consider relocating them as they can leave a sticky residue on blinds that attracts more dust.
