Importance of World Population Day

New Delhi: World Population Day is celebrated every year on 11 July. The theme of this year is, “To make the youth worthy so that they can create a family in a justified and hopeful world as per their wish.” On this occasion, Senior Medical Officer, Dr. Meera Pathak shared his views on growing population, women’s rights and social responsibilities.

Population is not just data

Dr. Meera Pathak said in a conversation with a media channel that the population is not just a number, but it is the story of those who are part of this figure. India’s population is now over 140 crores, and 54 children are born every minute. In this context, we should focus on population as well as health, education, resources and rights.

Focus on reproductive health

He informed that one of the main objectives of World Population Day is to raise awareness about reproductive health. This health is not only physical, but also to mental, social and emotional aspects. Women should have the right to decide themselves when they have to get married and how many children should be.

Government role

Dr. Pathak said that every woman has the right to take important decisions of her life. If they get correct information and resources, they can do better family planning. This will not only improve their health, but will also change in the society. He referred to the government’s schemes such as the National Family Welfare Program and the National Health Mission, which provide free contraceptive method to the couples.

Importance of cafeteria approach

Dr. Pathak mentioned the modern ‘Cafeteria Approach’ of family planning, in which women and couples should have the freedom to choose contraceptive options according to their needs. This is possible only when they have accurate and scientific information available.

Importance of equality in society

He also said that if the youth are prepared mentally, physically and emotionally, then only they should plan a family or pregnancy. World Population Day is not only a day of warning, but it is an opportunity to discuss possibilities and solutions. A society where there is no discrimination between boy and girl and everyone gets equal opportunities, this will be the right step towards a permanent and equitable world.
