Mahindra and UNO Minda came forward
According to government sources, Mahindra has recently shown interest in domestic production in a meeting with Ministry of Heavy Industries. The company is also ready for a partnership or long-term supply contract with the domestic manufacturer. Mahindra has recently launched two new electric SUVs and now they want to ensure stable supply of Rare Earth Magnets to secure their future. At the same time, Uno Minda is also taking steps in this direction, so that India’s industry can get rid of Chinese dependence.

Why is rare meaning magnets so important?
These magnets are used in the motors, smartphones, computers, MRI machines and even missile systems of electric vehicles. They are similar to heartbeat for EV industry. Stopping of China’s supply can affect the entire auto sector.

The government official said that it may take us 1-2 years to become completely self-sufficient, but we have to start today. The government is also working on subsidy and incentive schemes to encourage this production.
