Tesla First Glimpse: The world’s leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, Tesla, has finally made its presence felt in India. The company will inaugurate its first showroom at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai on 15 July. This launch will take place after many years of discussion and waiting, and has become a symbol of Tesla’s entry into the Indian market. Launch Tesla’s showroom in Mumbai and it will be Tesla’s first official store in India. On the occasion, the company shared its plans in detail and stated that after the inauguration of the showroom, the company plans to speed up its operation in India.
Tesla signed a lease agreement for its showroom in Mumbai in March this year, after which the company took steps towards starting local sales operations. According to reports, Tesla has already sent five units of model Y from his Shanghai factory to Mumbai, priced at ₹ 2.77 million (about $ 31,988) per car. Due to 70% of tariffs on imported cars in India, the additional import duty on these vehicles can come around ₹ 2.1 million per unit. However, the company had long advocated the import duty cut, causing Tesla’s entry to India.
Talking to the media last month, Union Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy said, “We really have no hope from Tesla, they just have to start the showroom.” He is not interested in manufacturing in India. This statement indicates that Tesla’s main focus in India is on the establishment of retail infrastructure, not local production.
Tesla’s entry in India was possible after a long -run conversation. CEO Alan Musk had earlier said that his visit to India was delayed "Heavy obligations" Causted The company had demanded a discount in import duty, under which it was talked about reducing tariffs by 70% on cars worth less than $ 40,000 and 100% on expensive models. However, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal made it clear earlier this year that India would not change the favor of any one vehicle manufacturer in its policies. He said, the government aims to attract not only Tesla, but also to all global EV manufacturers. Goyal also stated that the government aims to create a strong electric vehicle ecosystem that will help reduce carbon emissions and cut oil imports.
Tesla’s entry into India has occurred after a decline in sales in major markets like Europe and China. In such a situation, stepping into EV markets like India for Tesla can be a part of the company’s long strategy.
