A major developments have come to light in the world of AI and technology. Google’s parent company Alphabet has not only obtained the license of their state-of-the-art coding technology from AI coding startup Windsurf, but has also included the startup CEO Varun Mohan and co-founder Douglas Chen in their AI Units Deepmind. This deal is also special because the first Openai was planning to deal about $ 3 billion with Windsurf, which was later broken.
The conversation between Windsurf and Openai had gone ahead. Openai wanted to buy this technology, but his greatest investor caused the breakdown of differences with Microsoft. Actually, Openai did not want Microsoft to have access to the technique of Windsurf, while Openai has to share Microsoft most of its technical resources. As long as the deal was exclusive, Windsurf did not talk to anyone else, but after the exclusiveness was over, he started talking to Google.
Google has included its founder and top engineering team in Deepmind along with taking the license of Windsurf’s core technology. Google spokesperson Chris Pappas confirmed that he is constantly investing to strengthen his AI strategy, especially Gemini AI model, and is very excited to join Windsurf’s team.
Windsurf started in 2021 and is an AI coding assistant startup that helps developers to write code through natural language. It has so far raised funding of $ 200 million and has received support from investors such as startup Greenoaks Capital Partners and AIX ventures.
Deepmind is already a leader in innovation and is working on models like Gemini. By joining Windsurf’s technology and talent team, Google will get an important edge towards agentic coding ie AI to generate the code automatically. This deal directly brings Google to challenge AI giants like Openai and Microsoft.
