Intel layoffs: Intel is set to conduct the biggest round of layoffs in its history and plans to sack about 2400 workers in Oregon nearly five time times more than the number reported earlier in the week. This the first significant action by the chip-making giant under new CEO Lip-Bu Tan as part of a company-wide restructuring drive.
How many jobs are at risk?
According to various reports the upcoming round of Intel layoffs could see as many 4000 workers being cut across the United States including in California Arizona and Texas. But Oregon the site of Intels largest campus which employed 20000 people before the latest jobs cuts will bear the brunt of the latest round of Intel layoffs with 1500 jobs likely to be cut at the chipmakers Ronler Acres site in Hillsboro alone.
Intel layoffs are also poised to further downgrade the already strained economy of Oregon by reducing state tax revenues and decreasing consumer spending power. Notably Intel enjoys about $260 million annually in tax breaks and could face scrutiny if it stalls promised expansions.
Why Intel conducted mass layoffs?
According to media reports Intel issued an internal memo to its workers saying the decision was extremely difficult but required to achieve a more competitive space in the market.
We have been taking action to build a leaner and more agile engineering- and technician-driven Intel Foundry that is poised to build customer trust. These decisions are extremely difficult but they are necessary to help Intel achieve a more competitive market position and to put our company on a solid footing for the future The Oregonian reported citing Intels internal memo to employees.
While the memo did not specify how many or which positions in the Intel Foundry-- Intels in-house manufacturing arm-- would be affected employees in other departments indicated they are operating on a similar timeline the report said.
Citing company sources the report said that Intel has granted some flexibility to its individual business units to implement the layoffs in the way they see fit on condition that the companys financial targets are met.
Will Intel workers receive severance pay benefits?
As per reports a majority of laid-off Intel workers will receive 13 weeks severance pay in addition to compensation based on tenure and a year of health coverage.
