What happens when the person you trust most turns out to be the one who destroys you? Abducted in Plain Sight a disturbing documentary tells the true story of how a seemingly harmless neighbour shattered an entire family’s life in 1970s Idaho.
The story which has an IMDb rating of 6.7 revolves around 12-year-old Jan Broberg who was manipulated brainwashed and abducted not once but twice all by the same man whom her family had welcomed into their lives like a close friend.
This isn’t fiction; it’s a real account of how predator Robert Berchtold earned the trust of the Broberg family. Charming and disarming on the surface he slowly wove himself into their lives ultimately using that trust to kidnap Jan under the guise of an “alien mission.” Yes he convinced her that she was chosen to save another planet — a lie so wild it’s hard to believe until you hear it from Jan herself.
As shocking as the kidnapping was what’s even more terrifying is how Berchtold psychologically manipulated not just Jan but her parents too keeping them under his spell for years.
