Rishabh Pant Gets Run Out by Ben Stokes: Call him a ‘Saviour’ or ‘Superman’ or ‘Messiah,’ Ben Stokes finds ways to make an impact in the game whenever his team desperately needs him.
During the first session of day 3 of the India vs England Lord’s Test, Stokes, if not with the bat or ball, dented India with a brilliant effort in the field that brought the downfall of Rishabh Pant.
India started day 3 at 145/3 in their first innings, replying to England’s first innings total of 387. During the session, Rahul moved from 53 to 98* and Pant from 19 to 74. Both batsmen fought off England’s short-ball ploy—England pacers bowled over 60% of their deliveries in this session short-pitched—and Pant also took down off-spinner Shoaib Bashir.
India were on the verge of playing out a wicketless session before lunch on day 3 at Lord’s, with KL Rahul and Pant converting their overnight partnership into a century stand.
However, in the last over before lunch, with four balls to go for the end of the session, Pant got run out through an outstanding fielding effort from Stokes, the England skipper.
Perhaps Pant wanted Rahul to get the strike and reach his century milestone before heading into lunch, and hence, the left-hander pushed for a tight single. But that brought his own dismissal.
Pant played a defensive push off Bashir on the offside. Rahul set off for the single, and Pant, after hesitating for a split second, began his sprint too. Stokes rushed through from cover, swooped the ball swiftly, and in the same motion, turned around and fired the throw at the non-striker’s end that hit the stumps on the bounce, catching Pant short by a few inches.
Ben Stokes was pumped up, and that showed in his celebrations once the runoutwas confirmed. Pant dragged himself off the field alone, ruing a chance for missing his own century and leaving the gates open for England to storm back in the game.
At lunch on day 3, India are 248/4, trailing by 139 more runs, with Rahul on 98*.
