New Delhi: India has increased oil imports from Russia despite US bans and tariff threats India increased crude oil imports from Russia in June. This is the highest in almost a year. This happened due to tensions in West Asia especially due to the conflict between Israel and Iran due to which refiners are storing oil.
According to data from global commodity tracking firm Kpler India imported 2.08 million barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil from Russia last month. This is the highest since July 2024. Russia is at the forefront among the countries from which India buys crude oil. After Russia comes Iraq Saudi Arabia and other countries.
What are the statistics for June?
The Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) said in a note that Indias global crude oil imports fell 6 per cent in June. But imports from Russia rose 8 per cent. This is the highest since July 2024. CREA further said that more than half of this import from Russia was done by three refineries of India. These refineries also export refined products to G7+ countries.
Why Russian oil?
India imports more than 85 per cent of its crude oil needs. Earlier the Middle East was the largest source. But in the last three years Russia has become the largest supplier. Western countries imposed sanctions on Russia after Russias invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. This forced Russian producers to give huge discounts. Because of this Indian refineries started buying oil from Russia. Now Russia accounts for about 40 per cent of Indias total crude oil imports.
Which country is supplying how much oil to India?
Russia is Indias largest oil supplier with 2.08 million barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil import. Iraq is Indias second-largest oil supplier. In June 893000 bpd of oil was imported from Iraq. This is 17.2 percent less than the previous month. Saudi Arabia exported 581000 bpd of oil to India while shipments from the UAE increased 6.5 percent to 490000 bpd followed by the USA at fifth spot with 303000 bpd.
According to Kpler data Iraq accounts for 18.5 percent of Indias oil imports Saudi Arabia 12.1 percent UAE 10.2 percent and US 6.3 percent.
