Tesla is initially offering two versions of models in India: Rear Wheel Drive Model is priced at Rs 60.1 lakh ($ 70,000) and long haul variants cost Rs 67.8 lakh ($ 79,000). These prices are significant compared to other markets – the same vehicle prices in the United States 38.6 ($ 44,990), in China 30.5 ($ 36,700) and in Germany 46 lakh ($ 53,700) ($ 45,970) starts – this difference is mainly due to India’s huge import duty.

Despite the high prices, Tesla will target the rich urban customers in India and join the premium EV segment dominated by German vehicle manufacturers like BMW and Mercedes-Benz. While Tesla is still entering the market with petrol and diesel vehicles, the EV sector in India is slowly taking the momentum and the growing market manufacturers like Tata Motors and Mahindra are at the forefront. India aims to increase EVs by up to 5 percent in total car sales by promoting tax deductions and foreign vehicle manufacturers.
