Intel last week laid off over 500 employees in Oregon and is now preparing to cut an additional 2400 jobs in the state. This will take total layoffs in Oregon to 2892. The chipmaker is expected to reduce nearly 4000 positions according to a report by The Oregonian. This development shows the company’s strategic shift under its new CEO Lip-Bu Tan who is under pressure to simplify operations reduce costs and bring back Intel’ in a good position  in the global semiconductor market. Intel has been struggling to keep pace with rivals like TSMC and NVIDIA. Intel Layoffs Oregon where Intel is the largest private employer with 20000 workers. The layoffs will affect around 12% of Intel’s local workforce making this one of the largest mass layoffs in the state’s history. In a filing with Oregon state authorities Intel confirmed the revised layoff figures on Friday. The job cuts are impacting critical roles across companies like chip designers cloud software specialists physical design engineers and even senior executives like business leads and a vice president of IT. Intel’s internal foundry division which oversees chip manufacturing is reportedly one of the hardest-hit areas. A leaked internal memo shows that up to 20% of manufacturing staff could be let go. Intel Layoffs Impact These layoffs are not being presented as voluntary exits or early retirement offers. Instead impacted employees are receiving either a 60-day or four-week notice along with nine weeks of severance pay and benefits. The job losses in Oregon are part of a broader effort by Intel to restructure its global operations. The company has also issued pink slips to staff in California Arizona and Texas and recently shut down its automotive chip unit in Munich Germany which focused on software-defined vehicles. Most employees from that unit are also expected to be laid off. In a statement Intel said the workforce reduction is aimed at creating a “leaner faster and more efficient company.” It emphasized that the restructuring will reduce organizational complexity and improve execution allowing the company to better serve its customers.
