After a long wait, electric vehicle giant Tesla has launched its first electric SUV Model Y in India. From the company, it has been introduced in two variants- Standard RWD and Long Range RWD in India. This launch confirms Tesla’s official presence in India. Its sales will begin initially in metro cities like Delhi, Gurugram and Mumbai.
The on-road starting price of Model Y starts at ₹ 61.07 lakhs, which is for the Standard RWD variants. At the same time, the price of Long Range RWD variant has been fixed at ₹ 69.15 lakh. The company has announced that its delivery will be started from the third quarter (Q3) of 2025.
While the same car is available in America for $ 44,990 (about ₹ 38 lakh), why is its price in India so much? The biggest reason for this is India’s import duty, which is up to 70% on CBU – Completely Built Unit. Only as a tax costs more than ₹ 21 lakhs on a vehicle.
Apart from this, this car of Tesla is being brought to India from Shanghai plant in China, which also adds additional expenses like logistics, transport and custom duty. This is the reason that Indian customers are paying more than the US market.
Tesla Model Y has been introduced in two variants:-
Standard RWD variant – It has a 60KWH LFP battery, which gives a range of about 500 km. This SUV can catch the speed of 0 to 100 km/h in only 5.6 seconds.
Long Range RWD variant – It has a 75kwh NMC battery, which offers a range of 622 km and this model is capable of catching a speed of 0 to 100 km/h in less than 5 seconds.
Tesla Model Y, introduced in India, has been launched with several advanced technological features, including:-
Over-the-air software updates
Separate touchscreen display for rear seats
Electric adjustable rear seats
Tesla’s premium sound system
All these features make this SUV extremely competitive in terms of technology not only in India but also in other markets of the world.
Currently, this electric SUV will be available in three cities of India- Delhi, Gurugram and Mumbai. Tesla aims to expand its presence in other major cities of India in the coming months. The company has already started its showroom and charging stations in Mumbai and Delhi.
