Since July 1, 1.4 lakh new accounts have been opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana and more than 5.4 lakh enrollments have been done in three insurance schemes. These figures have been released by the Department of Financial Services.

Since July 1, about 1.4 lakh new Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana accounts have been opened and more than 5.4 lakh new enrollments have been done under three Jan Suraksha Yojanas. This information was given by the Department of Financial Services (DFS). DFS has launched a three-month nationwide campaign from July 1 to September 30 to increase the reach of major schemes like Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) and Atal Pension Yojana (APY).

According to a statement from the Finance Ministry, the campaign aims to achieve comprehensive coverage in all Gram Panchayats (GPs) and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to ensure that every eligible citizen can avail the benefits of these transformative schemes. Under the campaign, from July 1 till now, a total of 43,447 camps have been organized in various districts to facilitate enrollment of beneficiaries under major schemes and promote financial literacy.

So far, progress reports of 31,305 camps have been prepared. The government department said that the campaign will run till September 30, covering about 2.70 lakh Gram Panchayats (GPs) and urban local bodies. The campaign reflects the government's commitment to ensure financial empowerment at the last mile through access to formal financial services and enhance socio-economic inclusion.

What is the objective of the government

The objective of these initiatives of the government is to bring the people deprived of banking services into the ambit of mainstream banking, which will give impetus to inclusive and sustainable economic development. Earlier, the Finance Ministry had issued a statement clarifying that the government has not issued any order to the banks to close inactive Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana accounts.

The Department of Financial Services issued a statement saying, "It has not asked the banks to close inactive Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana accounts." Some media reports claimed that the government has directed to close such accounts under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) in which there has been no transaction in the last 24 months. According to the PMJDY website, this scheme has 55.76 crore beneficiaries so far, and a total of Rs 2,61,142.63 crore is deposited in their accounts.
