Veteran Pakistani actor Humayun Saeed recently shared insightful details about his casting experience in Netflix’s internationally acclaimed series The Crown. From overcoming illness during auditions to portraying a significant Pakistani character, Saeed opened up about the meaningful journey behind his role.
He revealed that his audition process began while he was battling COVID-19. With the help of a close friend who is a director, he recorded a romantic scene at home. Despite being unwell, his performance impressed the casting team, who continued sending him scenes to audition. One of these involved a live reading with the actress who played Princess Diana. “After a few rounds, I made it to the final two. When I didn’t hear back for nearly three weeks, I asked them not to call unless I had the part. Eventually, I got the call — I had been selected,” he said.
Humayun explained that while he never actively pursued work in the West, this role stood out to him. “I’ve always preferred working in Pakistan, but this project mattered. I was representing a Pakistani character, and it felt important. It was a proud moment for me and for many others who saw someone from their own country take on a Pakistani role internationally.”
Addressing the much-discussed kissing scene in the show, Saeed admitted he felt uneasy due to the cultural differences. “I told my co-actor how we don’t usually have such scenes in our dramas and even maintain distance when portraying married couples. She was surprised but reassured me. She also told me the producer chose me right after seeing my photo.”
Talking about compensation, Saeed shared that the amount he received for his role in The Crown was substantial — equivalent to what he earns for an entire drama series in Pakistan.
