The central government will install Artificial Intelligence (AI) based facial recognition system at 7 large railway stations for the safety of women. The government has given this information in response to a PIL in the Supreme Court. The petition raised concerns over the increasing crimes against women. The government said that the National Database (NDSO) of sex criminals is now ready with more than 2 million entries and security efforts are being increased.

The government has said that not only Railways, but also in 8 metros like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Lucknow and Ahmedabad, AI technology is being used under safe city project. These include smart lighting, drone cameras, facial recognition and number plate scanners are being installed. These measures are being taken especially in areas that are considered highly risky. This is helping to prevent and monitor crime.

The 7 major railway stations that the government plans to install facial recognition systems include New Delhi, Howrah, Pune, Chennai Central, Bangalore City Junction, Ahmedabad and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CST) of Mumbai. This modern technology at these stations will help increase the safety of women and identify criminals. The Ministry of Home Affairs has clearly mentioned all these stations in the affidavit filed in the Supreme Court.

The Ministry of Home Affairs said that out of 983 railway stations, 499 IERMS system is already active and 740 cameras are installed at 67 stations of Konkan Railway. At the same time, the Women’s Lawyer Association said that crimes are increasing continuously and still 23.66 lakh cases are pending. He questioned the usefulness of existing technical systems such as CCTNS and I4C. The Supreme Court bench will hear this petition on Monday.
