Team India captain Shubman Gill has been taking a lot of flak for his behaviour on Day 3 of the third Test against England at Lord’s last week. Gill was seen in an ultra-aggressive mode taking on England opener Zak Crawley for wasting time just before stumps on third day.
Crawley and Ben Duckett tried to waste as much time as possible in England’s second innings to the anger of Gill and Team India. The Indian captain was heard shouting from the slips “Grow some f****** ba**s.”
Off the penultimate delivery of the over bowled by Jasprit Bumrah Crawley was hit on the glove and immediately called for the English physio. That angered the whole Indian team who responded with slow claps in sarcasm.
Gill then walked up to the opener and gestured at the pavilion and mocked him as well. Crawley was also seen responding to Gill with Ben Duckett and umpires stepping in.
England openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett were 90 seconds late: Shubman Gill
The Indian captain cleared the air about his behaviour in the Lord’s Test in the pre-match press conference in Manchester on Tuesday.
“So let me just clear the air for once and for all. The English batsmen on that day they had seven minutes of play left. They were 90 seconds late to come to the crease” Gill told the media at Old Trafford in Manchester on Tuesday.
“Not 10 not 20 90 seconds late. Yes most of the teams they use this. Even if we were in a position we would have also liked to play lesser overs. But there’s a manner to do it. And we felt yes if you get hit on your body the physios are allowed to come on. And that is something that is fair.
“But to be able to come 90 seconds late on the crease is not something that I would think comes in the spirit of the game. And just leading up to that event a lot of things that we thought should not have happened it had happened. I wouldnt say it was something that I’m very proud of” he added.
Gill also added that his behaviour wasn’t pre-planned and a lot of things had happened in the lead up to that. “There was a lead-up and build-up to that. It didn’t just come out of nowhere. And we had no intention of doing that whatsoever. It is just that you’re playing a game you’re playing to win. And there are a lot of emotions involved. And when you see there are things happening that should not happen sometimes the emotions come out of nowhere” the Indian captain added.
Opportunity arose not to be nice guys: Harry Brook
Earlier England batter Harry Brook had revealed to the media that England head coach Brendon McCullum had pointed that their players were being ‘too nice’.
“He actually said a few days before that we are too nice sometimes. I brought it up the night before the last day: ‘Baz said the other day we’re too nice I think tomorrow is a perfect opportunity to really get stuck into them’. It came at the perfect time. The opportunity that arose for us to not be the nice guys was because of what they did the night before” Brook said in Manchester on Monday.
“We watched two of our guys out there on their own going back at the Indians after they were going at them. We just thought ‘we’re not standing for that’. We had a conversation and said ‘it’s time to not be those nice guys that we have been before’” he added.
The fourth Test between India and England will begin at Old Trafford in Manchester on Wednesday. England are 2-1 up in the five-match Test series after their 22-run win in the third Test at Lords.
