If you use UPI, then there is a big update for you. From August 1, 2025, there are going to be major changes in the rules of UPI. These changes are related to balance check, autopay, transaction status, etc. These will affect all UPI users. These changes are being made to improve the UPI experience so that crores of users can take advantage of digital payments without any interruption.

If you are also one of those crores of Indians who use UPI apps like GPay, PhonePe, or Paytm for their daily needs, then it is very important for you to know about this news related to Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Actually, from August 1, all the rules related to UPI are going to change. These changes will also affect you. These changes are being made to make the ecosystem better, smoother and more reliable than before, so that all complaints like server interruption, payment delay can be resolved. NPCI is now going to make 7 major changes in UPI, which will come into effect from August 1.

1. The habit of checking balance will be curbed

The first and biggest change is related to the limit of checking balance. Under the new rule, now you will be able to check your account balance only 50 times a day from any one UPI app. NPCI believes that many users unnecessarily check the balance repeatedly, which increases the pressure on the server and slows down the speed of transactions. This limit is enough for the common user and will improve the performance of the system.

2. Limit has also been set for viewing linked bank accounts

Now you will be able to see the list of all bank accounts linked to your mobile number only 25 times a day. The purpose of this step is to reduce unnecessary API calls in the system, so that UPI service can run more smoothly.

3. Autopay transactions will now happen at specific times

If you use the autopay facility to pay for Netflix, mutual fund SIP or any other bill, then it is important for you to know this. Now all such autopay transactions will be processed only during non-peak times. Three time slots have been fixed for this:

Before 10 am

Between 1 pm and 5 pm

After 9:30 pm

This change will reduce the pressure on the server during peak hours (busiest time) and normal transactions will be able to happen without any interruption.

4. You will not be able to check the status of failed transactions again and again

Many times when a payment fails, we check its status again and again. Now a limit has been imposed on this as well. You will be able to check the status of a failed transaction only three times a day. Not only this, it will also be necessary to keep a gap of at least 90 seconds between checking the status every time. This rule will help in reducing the load on the server and increasing the success rate of reversal or retry of the transaction.

Strict instructions for banks and apps

Apart from these limits, NPCI has given strict instructions to all banks and payment service providers (PSPs) to monitor and control the use of APIs, so that there is no glitch in the system. Non-compliance with the rules can lead to ban on API access, ban on adding new users or even fine.

This change has been implemented in June

This rule has come into effect from June 30, 2025, before August 1. Under this, now whenever you send money to someone, before making the payment, you see the name of that person registered in the bank on the screen. With this step, the risk of money going to the wrong account and fraud has been reduced significantly.
