On July 18, OpenAI announced the launch of this agent, but even after a week, many users had not received this feature. Regarding this delay, on Thursday, the company said in a post on X (formerly Twitter), "Sorry about the delay!" However, OpenAI did not give any reason for this technical delay.

The operator will be retired.

ChatGPT Agent is considered to be an advanced version of Operator, which was introduced last year. While Operator could only do limited and simple tasks, Agent is now capable of automatically doing complex and multi-command tasks as well. For this reason, OpenAI has also announced that Operator will be discontinued in the coming weeks.

ChatGPT Agent capabilities

ChatGPT Agent is equipped with several modern tools:

Text-based browser: for gathering information

Visual browser: for interacting with the web

In-built coding IDE: for coding tasks

Access to public APIs: for external data and services

Virtual computer: for controlling all the above tools

Connection to third-party platforms

ChatGPT Agent can now also connect to third-party platforms like Gmail and GitHub. Users can assign tasks to it, and if they want, they can also intervene in any task themselves, like logging in or changing a task. A small window will appear in the user interface, where everything that the Agent is doing will be visible live. With the arrival of this feature, OpenAI's ChatGPT has become a fully autonomous and multi-purpose digital assistant, not just a simple chatbot.
