According to preliminary information, a container brake failed in Lonawala-Khandala Ghat area on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The container was going from Pune to Mumbai. The driver lost control of the container due to the brake failure. Due to this, the container went ahead at high speed and hit several vehicles.
It is being told that the container hit the vehicles one after the other within a radius of one and a half to two kilometers, in which small vehicles suffered heavy losses. In this accident, 15 to 17 vehicles collided with each other.
The injured were removed from the crashed vehicles and admitted to the hospitals. One passenger was killed and about 17 passengers were seriously injured in the accident. Currently all the passengers have been brought to the hospital in Khopoli.
Traffic on the expressway came to a complete standstill after the accident. Several kilometers long queues of stranded vehicles were found. Police and local officials are making tireless efforts to restore normal conditions. Traffic is being diverted on alternative routes due to congestion.
