New Delhi: Englands legendary batsman Kevin Pietersen has given rise to a new debate. He claimed that batting in Test cricket in the current era has become much easier than it was 20-25 years ago. Pietersens comments came a day after Joe Root surpassed Ricky Ponting to become second in the list of highest run-scorers in Test cricket. He wrote on X (former Twitter) Dont shout at me but batting nowadays is much easier than 20/25 years ago! It was probably twice as difficult then!
Called bowling in the past era more challenging
Pietersen who played 104 Tests 136 ODIs and 37 T20s for England from 2005 to 2013 is known for his aggressive style on the field as well as his outspoken opinions. Pietersen who scored 8181 runs in Tests at an average of 47.28 says that batting was twice as difficult then. He named many great bowlers of the past and challenged the readers to name 10 bowlers of today who are equal to them.
Challenge given from the list of great bowlers
Pietersen wrote Waqar Shoaib Akram Mushtaq Kumble Srinath Harbhajan Donald Pollock Klusener Gough McGrath Lee Warne Gillespie Bond Vettori Craig Cairns Vaas Murali Curtly Courtney... this list is endless. I have named 22. Please tell me the names of 10 bowlers of today who can be compared to them.
Joe Roots historic performance
On the third day of the fourth Test against India Root played a brilliant innings of 150 runs in 248 balls. Due to this innings he surpassed Ricky Ponting and secured the second position in the list of highest run scorers in Test cricket.
England increased pressure on India
In the fourth Test England captain Ben Stokes also scored a century after two years and scored 141 runs in 198 balls. England took a huge lead of 311 runs over India by scoring 669 runs in their first innings. Ravindra Jadeja took four wickets for India while Jasprit Bumrah gave more than 100 runs in an innings for the first time in his Test career. Now the bounce of the pitch can become a challenge for Indias batting. However by the stumps on 4th day India have well managed to pull things up with a brilliant partnership of KL Rahul and Shubman Gill.
