Records Shubman Gill Broke During His Century in 4th Test: Shubman Gill continued his authority with the bat in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 as he creamed a brilliant century, and arguably his best of the series, in the IND vs ENG 4th Test in Manchester.
India’s task of saving the Test match had already been cut out earlier, and it became even more challenging on day 5 as the pitch seemed to have suddenly gotten spicier: the surface offered plenty of uneven bounce to the pacers, with balls rearing off length and shooting low from the same spot; further, left-arm spinner Liam Dawson also got a good amount of rough outside the left-hander’s off-stump to bowl at.
In the face of adversity, as he stared down losing his debut Test series as India’s captain, Shubman Gill produced a terrific century at Old Trafford, in the course of which he broke and attained several batting records, putting his name alongside legends like Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar, with Don Bradman also now in sight on some lists.
England had ended their first innings with a lead of 311 runs, batting India out of the game with a little over five sessions to go. Chris Woakes dismissed Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan in the first over of India’s second innings, and an innings defeat loomed large.
However, India’s hopes of saving the Test match were kept alive by the magnificent partnership between KL Rahul and Shubman Gill of 188 runs off 421 balls. The duo negotiated two full sessions on day 4, but Rahul was dismissed by Ben Stokes at the start of day 5 for 90.
And while Gill went on to reach his century, he, too, was eventually dismissed in the first session, at the stroke of lunch, by Jofra Archer for 103.
Let us look at some stats and records that stand out following Gill’s latest century in the IND vs ENG 4th Test in Manchester.
Shubman Gill now has the third-most runs for India in a single Test series. He is 52 runs behind Sunil Gavaskar’s record of 774 runs.
774 – Sunil Gavaskar vs WI, 1971 (Away)
732 – Sunil Gavaskar vs WI, 1978/79 (Home)
722 – Shubman Gill vs ENG, 2025 (Away)
712 – Yashasvi Jaiswal vs English, 2024 (home)
The record for the most runs in a single Test series belongs to Don Bradman, who scored 974 runs against England in the 1930 Ashes. Gill needs 253 runs to break that record and has one more Test match left in this series.
Further, with four centuries in this series, Gill now has the joint-most centuries by an Indian batsman in a Test series and by a captain in a Test series. If he hits one more century in the fifth IND vs ENG Test at the Oval, he will hold both these records.
4 – Sunil Gavaskar vs WI, 1971 (Away)
4 – Sunil Gavaskar vs WI, 1978/79 (Home)
4 – Virat Kohli vs AUS, 2014/15 (away)
4 – Shubman Gill vs ENG, 2025 (Away)
4 – Sir Don Bradman vs IND, 1947/48 (Home)
4 – Sunil Gavaskar vs WI, 1978/79 (Home)
4 – Shubman Gill vs ENG, 2025 (Away)
Also, Shubman Gill now has the second-most runs by a batsman in his debut series as Test captain. The only man ahead of him on this tally is Bradman, who piled up 810 runs in the 1936/37 Ashes. Gill is 88 runs behind Bradman’s record.
810 – Sir Don Bradman (AUS) vs ENG, 1936/37 (Home)
722 – Shubman Gill (IND) vs ENG, 2025 (Away)
702 – Greg Chappell (AUS) vs WI, 1975/76 (Home)
636 – Clive Lloyd (WI) vs IND, 1974/75 (Away)
Gill is only the eighth captain in the history of Test cricket to amass more than 700 runs in a Test series, joining the likes of Don Bradman, Garfield Sobers, Greg Chappell, Sunil Gavaskar, David Gower, Graham Gooch, and Graeme Smith.
