Microsoft has launched Copilot Mode in its Edge browser, offering features like multi-tab context, in-browser actions, and session continuity. Available for free as an opt-in update, it is designed to rival Google’s AI Mode and keep Edge relevant in the rapidly evolving AI-powered browsing landscape.

Microsoft has introduced Copilot Mode in its Edge browser, a significant upgrade aimed at integrating AI-driven assistance directly into the browsing experience. The update is positioned to compete with Google’s recently launched AI Mode in Search, reflecting tech giants' new race - to embed artificial intelligence across its products.

Announced via the official Windows developer blog, Copilot Mode is now available as a free opt-in feature in Microsoft Edge. It leverages Microsoft's Copilot AI capabilities directly within the browser interface.

One of the key features of Copilot Mode is its ability to understand and respond using multi-tab context, allowing it to generate insights or take action based on the content open across multiple browser tabs. For instance, if a user is researching a topic across several pages, Copilot can summarize and cross-reference information from all open tabs.

The update also introduces in-browser actions, enabling users to execute tasks like summarizing documents, drafting emails, or creating to-do lists without switching apps. Additionally, Copilot is more accessible within Edge, placed in a persistent sidebar for quick interaction.

A notable functionality is the new “pick up where you left off” feature, which remembers previous Copilot conversations and page interactions, making it easier to resume tasks without repeating queries. The tool also supports natural language commands, further simplifying user interaction.

Microsoft clarified that Copilot Mode does not require a separate installation and will gradually roll out to all Edge users in the coming weeks. Users can enable it manually from browser settings or when prompted within Edge.

While Copilot Mode enhances productivity, Microsoft emphasized that it complements rather than replaces traditional search or navigation tools. The company aims to maintain Edge’s relevance in the growing market of AI-assisted browsing, where competitors like Google are also advancing with integrated AI tools.
