India is set to expose England to the unknown at the Oval with Shubman Gill and Gautam Gambhir set to play a major gamble in the fifth Test of the series and turn towards Arshdeep Singh, who will be given a Test debut on Thursday (July 31) with the visitors aiming to level the series.
Arshdeep, who got a maiden call-up to the Test team for the England tour, warmed the bench for the first three Tests as Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna got the nod for the first Test as specialist pacer for the first Test while Akash Deep came in for the second and third match. Arshdeep injured himself in the nets in the build-up to the fourth Test and was ruled out of the game due to a cut on his bowling hand. With Akash also dealing with an injury, Anshul Kamboj got his maiden Test cap in Manchester despite not being in the original squad. As per a report by The Times of India, Arshdeep is set to become India's 319th Test cricketer at the Oval. The published information reveals Arshdeep will replace Jasprit Bumrah, while Akash will also return to the playing XI and join Mohammed Siraj in a three-man pace attack. However, the same report states that plans could change around Bumrah, and a late call will be taken. Although, Arshdeep is yet to play Test cricket, he is a well-known name on the international circuit and is India's highest wicket-taker in T20Is. The 26-year-old has played 63 matches for the Men in Blue in the shortest format and has 99 wickets. The left-arm pacer has also played nine ODIs and has 14 scalps. In first-class cricket, Arshdeep has played 21 games and taken 66 wickets. He also has red-ball cricket experience in England with a stint with Kent in 2023. He played five County Championship Division matches in the top division and got 13 wickets.
