Uttar Pradesh is soon going to become the first such state in the country, where Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data Analytics will be used to find out the exact causes of road accidents. The State Transport Department has approved a pilot project based on this technology, which has also received permission from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Now its test will be started.
Actually, the number of road accidents in Uttar Pradesh is continuously increasing. In the first six months of the year 2024, there were 25,830 road accidents in the state, in which 14,205 people lost their lives. There may be many reasons such as poor road design, weather conditions and driver’s negligence behind accidents, but they have not been able to analyze intensely.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed concern over this serious situation many times. On his instructions, the Transport Department prepared this plan in the direction of investigating the causes of accidents and prevention through AI technology. The project will be implemented by public sector company ITI Limited and International Technical Partners Amlojika. A budget of Rs 10 crore has already been approved for this effort.
In the initial phase, a ‘proof of concept’ will be prepared within six weeks, collecting data to accidents and analytical report will be prepared. This report will be sent to the Ministry. In the report, the AI model will be prepared by technically analyzing each accident, which will help in identifying black spots in the future.
This technology will also be used in future in other fields like driving license system, permit process, e-challan and vehicle data management. According to former Additional Commissioner Pushpasen Satyarthi, till now he had to depend on the manual report given by the police officers, so that the real causes of accidents could not be clear.
This technology will be integrated into the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) already existing in 17 cities of Uttar Pradesh. Transport Commissioner Brajesh Narayan Singh said that with AI technology, effective control will be possible by identifying the real causes of accidents, making the roads more safe.
