Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has made significant remarks regarding the ongoing trade discussions between the United States and India. He described these negotiations as quite challenging, emphasizing that India is engaged in talks with multiple nations. The US is not the only country involved in these discussions; negotiations are also underway with the European Union, and a deal has already been reached with the UK. Furthermore, India is exploring opportunities with other countries as well. Tharoor pointed out that if India cannot compete in the US market, it may need to diversify its markets outside the US. He stressed that there are no alternatives available.
Tharoor further stated that if the US makes unreasonable demands, India will have to look elsewhere for trade opportunities. He highlighted India's strength, noting that unlike China, India is not solely reliant on exports. The country boasts a robust domestic market. He urged that negotiators should receive strong backing to secure the best possible deal. If a favorable agreement cannot be reached, India may need to reconsider its position.
Congress MP Karti Chidambaram commented on Trump's unconventional approach to politics, stating that traditional diplomatic protocols and intergovernmental relations do not apply to him. He noted that Trump is very unorthodox and suggested that it is best to let him remain as he is without panicking. Chidambaram expressed hope that the government will maintain patience, continue negotiations, and ultimately reach an agreement with the US.
