The Election Commission of India on Friday announced that Vice Presidential elections will be held on September 9, 2025, following the sudden resignation of incumbent Jagdeep Dhankar on July 21 due to health reasons.
The post has remained vacant since.
The election body said that the notification for Vice Presidential election will be issued on August 7, with the last date for filing nomination papers and their scrutiny has been set to August 21.
Meanwhile, the last date for withdrawal of candidatures is August 25.
As for the results of the election, they will be announced on the polling day itself, that is, September 9, the ECI said. Polling is scheduled for 10 AM to 5 PM.
In preparation for the poll, the Election Commission has finalised the Electoral College list, which comprises all elected and nominated members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. In a post on X, the EC said the list is arranged in a continuous serial order, alphabetically by State/Union Territory, and will be available for purchase at a counter set up in the Commission office from the day of notification.
As per Article 66 of the Constitution, the Vice President is elected through a secret ballot by the electoral college consisting of members of both Houses of Parliament, following the proportional representation system using a single transferable vote.
The Constitution mandates that any vacancy in the office of the Vice President, whether due to resignation, death, or other reasons, must be filled as soon as possible. The person elected serves a full five-year term from the date they assume office.
