Tesla has just announced the launch date of its first charging station in India. Called Supercharger, the charging station will be set up at the Bandar Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai on 4 August. This comes shortly after the American EV giant set foot in the Indian market with the launch of Model Y and its first showroom at the same area in Mumbai a few weeks ago.
To be set up near the company’s BKC showroom, Tesla will have four V4 Supercharging Stalls, i.e., DC Chargers, along with four Destination Charging Stalls, i.e., AC chargers in this upcoming station. The Supercharging stations will have a peak capacity of 240 kW whereas the Destination charging stalls will have a capacity of 11 kW.
Tesla has also defined the charging cost of these stations. The DC fast charging units can be availed at Rs 24 per kW whereas the AC charging stations will come at a cost of Rs 11 per kW. This will mark the first of eight planned Supercharging stations in India, forming part of Tesla’s larger infrastructure initiative to support and expand longdistance EV travel across the country.
A standout feature is the Tesla Model Y’s rapid charging ability. It can add up to 267 km of range in just 15 minutes on a Supercharger, sufficient for five round trips between Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and the Gateway of India. Not just in Mumbai, but Tesla will establish a similar charging setup in Delhi as well, following the launch of the country’s second Tesla showroom in the national capital soon.
In the grand scheme of things, Delhi NCR will get four Supercharger locations — Aerocity, Saket, Gurugram and Noida — while Thane, Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Lower Parel, and Navi Mumbai are in Mumbai. A Reuters report previously stated that the company has plans to put up 16 Superchargers even in malls. Further, Tesla will establish its service centres starting from Mumbai and Delhi.
