Ongoing Hunger Strike in Guwahati

Guwahati, August 1: The indefinite hunger strike initiated by members of the Jyoti Kendra Shiksha Karmi Santha in Assam has reached its 10th day at the protest site in Chachal, Guwahati.

Beginning on July 23, the strike is led by education workers, known as Siksha Karmis, who are advocating for a salary increase, permanent job placements, and an extension of the retirement age to 60 years.

As the protest persists, the health conditions of several participants are declining.

“Today marks the 10th day of our protest. Our health is deteriorating, but we will not budge until our demands are met. We urge Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take swift action and provide a solid resolution,” expressed one of the protesting educators.

The demonstrators have pledged to remain at the site until their requests are addressed, even stating their readiness to sacrifice their lives if necessary.

When questioned about whether the Chief Minister had responded to their issues, the protesters mentioned they had met him several times.

“Each time, he promised a solution. However, nothing has materialized so far,” a protester stated.

Another participant voiced frustration over the administration's prolonged silence, saying, “We elected this government, yet they ignore our cries for help.”

Rijaul Islam, another protester, remarked, “The government previously claimed that addressing the concerns of Siksha Karmis would be a priority. But what kind of priority is this? No actions have been taken. We should be in classrooms teaching, not on the streets fighting for our rights.”

With their health declining and patience running thin, the Jyoti Kendra Siksha Karmis are steadfast in their protest amid increasing frustration over the lack of government response.
