In April 2017, an FIR was filed against the makers and actors of Behen Hogi Teri film that starred Bollywood actors Rajkummar Rao and Shruti Haasan in the lead roles.

Recently, a court hearing was held against Rao regarding a controversial poster used during the promotion of Behen Hogi Teri. After the FIR was filed for hurting religious sentiments, Rajkummar Rao's advocate, Darshan Dayal, argued that the poster was merely an artistic expression. Due to that, he was granted conditional bail by the Jalandhar Court.

The actor’s advocate, Darshan Dayal, shared details of the case. He said that in 2017, a poster of Rajkummar Rao dressed as Lord Shiva triggered anger among a certain community that led to the FIR and court case. At that time, a case was registered against actors Rajkummar Rao, Shruti Hassan, the producer, director, and deputy director of the film.

The trouble began after a poster featuring actor Rajkummar Rao dressed as Lord Shiva, was released on April 4, 2017. In the poster, the actor was seen dressed up as the deity, and seated on a silver motorbike with a UP number plate.

He sported a long mane, a moon crescent on his head, a rudraksh bracelet, sitting casually with a bored look on his face on a bike with slippers on his feet. The backdrop is of a street with shops with their shutters down.

The advocate said that the FIR was registered under Section 295A (act done with the intention of inciting religious sentiments), Section 120B (criminal conspiracy) and Section 67 of the IT Act, due to which non-bailable warrants were also issued against the actor.

In the latest hearing, Rajkummar Rao surrendered before the court in Jalandhar on July 28 in connection with the case related to his Behen Hogi Teri film. After presenting himself before the court, the actor was granted conditional bail.

His advocate said, “The challan was presented in the court in the absence of the actor. Since the address in the summons was in Delhi, he was not informed about appearing in the court. Actually, the actor is living in Mumbai. On the other hand, Shruti Hassan was acquitted in the case after the court found her innocent. Ajay K Pannalal (Director of the film) has reached the court today, whose petition has been filed in the court.”

The petition from the actor’s side also further stated that he merely played a film character, in which he portrayed the role of Lord Shiva in a Jagran troupe, and this is a completely artistic presentation. He also added that there was no intention to hurt the religious sentiments of any community.

He also argued that the film Behen Hogi Teri had received a Central Board of Film Certification certificate, indicating that the content of the film was not legally objectionable. It also said that his freedom of expression was protected under Article 19(1)(a), according to Darshan.
