Guwahati, Aug 1: Atul Bora, a Cabinet Minister and leader of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), announced on Friday that discussions regarding seat-sharing with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the upcoming elections have not yet occurred.
“We have not yet engaged in talks about which constituencies we will contest in the forthcoming elections. However, I am optimistic that the results will be beneficial for our party. Until we have discussions with the BJP regarding the constituencies, I cannot provide further details,” Bora stated.
He emphasized that the final determination of constituencies will follow consultations with the BJP, with announcements to be made subsequently.
Bora also highlighted the dedication of party workers and volunteers as they prepare for the upcoming Assembly elections.
“I have observed our party members and volunteers working together diligently. What some may perceive as dissent, I view as a resurgence. Their commitment will undoubtedly strengthen the AGP,” he remarked.
He noted that the unity among AGP members, volunteers, and leaders signifies the enduring strength of regionalism in Assam.
“A robust AGP equates to strong regionalism. In a rapidly changing political environment, the AGP is committed to advancing progressive regionalism to enhance Assam's strength and security,” Bora, who also oversees the implementation of the Assam Accord, stated.
His comments follow a recent incident of internal discord at the AGP’s Kamrup district convention in Chaygaon on July 20, where conflicts arose among attendees.
The convention, attended by over a thousand delegates, was led by district president Khagen Nath, with general secretary Subharam Das delivering the opening address. Former minister Dr. Kamala Kanta Kalita and former MLAs Satyabrata Kalita and Jyotiprasad Das were also present and spoke at the event.
During the gathering, leaders like Pradip Kumar Bora criticized the AGP leadership for autocratic behavior and their lack of response to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s alleged comments about Dr. Kamala Kanta Kalita.
In his address, AGP Rangiya constituency general secretary Pradip Kumar Bora launched a fierce critique of the party’s top brass, asserting that the AGP does not belong to Atul Bora and Keshab Mahanta. He also condemned the leadership's silence regarding CM Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma's alleged labeling of Dr. Kalita as a ‘duplicate leader’.
