New Delhi. In this era of Digital India, there is a very fast bounce in cases of cyber crime. The Ministry of Home Affairs has made it clear from the data presented in Parliament that the graph of cyber crimes is touching the sky. In the last four years, there has been an increase of 401 per cent in cases like online fraud, digital arrest, sextortion and cyber attack. In the year 2021, about 4.5 lakh cybercrime cases were registered.
By the year 2024, this figure increased to more than 22 lakhs. That is, more than four times the cases of cybercrime have gained more than four times. This figure did not stop here. At the end of half a year of 2025, more than 12 lakh cases have been registered till June 30, which has also left behind the annual figures of 2021 and 2022. Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh are the most affected states in the case of cybercrime.
This year, 1.6 lakh cases have been registered in Maharashtra so far. Uttar Pradesh is second with 1.4 lakh and Karnataka is third with 1 lakh. For the last three years, these three states have been struggling the most with cybercrime. In the last four years, Gujarat, Odisha and Karnataka have seen the highest bounce. Gujarat has increased 824 percent, Odisha 783 percent and Karnataka 763 percent has been registered.
The biggest threat hovering over children
Cybercrime is the most victims of children. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, between 2018 and 2022, more than three thousand child pornography cases have been reported. Stay connected with 500 cases of stocking have been reported against children under 18 years of age. The pace of these cases is increasing continuously. Online crime against children increased by 25 per cent in the year 2021. In 2022, this figure reached 32.5 percent.
Child pornography was being shared
Among them, crime to social media, chat room and online gaming was prominent. Last year, India Today’s Osint team revealed such telegram channels, which were sharing child pornography on a large scale. After this, Telegram was forced to remove these accounts.
761 cyber attacks every minute in India
The country’s security structure is also in the grip of cyber attacks continuously. According to the report of the Data Security Council of India (DSCI), an average of 761 cyber attack attempts were made every minute in India in 2024. Among them, there have been cyber attacks on healthcare, hospitality and banking sector.
Cyber attack after Pahalgam attack
After the Pahalgam Terror Attack in the year 2025, India has the most cyber attacks. During this time there were more than 15 lakh cyber attacks. Most of these targets became important structures like defense, electricity, telecom, finance and transport of the country. According to investigative agencies, these attacks were carried out by Pakistan and its associate hacking groups in a planned manner.
This is the new face of digital crime
It is clear from these data that India has now entered the most dangerous phase of cyber crime. On one hand, crimes like fraud and sexual abuse are holding the common people, on the other hand, foreign hacking networks are targeting the strategic security of the country.
