New Delhi, August 2 — A viral message circulating on WhatsApp claims that the Indian government has introduced new rules under which all WhatsApp voice and video calls will be recorded and saved. It also alleges that platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram will be monitored by government agencies. However, the government has officially declared this claim as completely false.
Millions of users in India use WhatsApp for personal and professional communication. Amid growing concerns about privacy, the message sparked panic, suggesting that users should avoid sharing any political or religious content, as the device would allegedly be connected to the Ministry’s system and violators could face arrest without a warrant.
Responding to this viral claim, the PIB Fact Check Unit of the Government of India posted a clarification on X (formerly Twitter), stating:
“Have you come across messages claiming new government guidelines for WhatsApp? PIB Fact Check has found this information to be false. No such rules or guidelines have been issued by the Government.”
The post also included a screenshot of the widely circulated message, which falsely claimed, among other things:
The device will remain connected to the government’s system
WhatsApp calls will be recorded and stored
Any negative messages against the Prime Minister or government may lead to arrest without a warrant
All social media activity will be monitored
The government has strongly denied issuing any such rules and urged citizens not to believe or forward such misleading messages.
