Mumbai: As the sacred month of Sawan (Shravana) continues, devotees across India are preparing to observe Putrada Ekadashi—an auspicious day dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Among the many Ekadashis observed in the Hindu calendar, the one falling in the Shukla Paksha of Sawan holds special importance for those seeking blessings for children and family well-being. This year, Putrada Ekadashi will be observed on 5 August 2025.

According to Hindu beliefs, observing a fast and performing rituals on Putrada Ekadashi is believed to remove obstacles to childbirth and grant the boon of progeny. It is also said to bring spiritual merit, purify one’s life from past sins, and bestow divine blessings. Here’s everything you need to know about the date, puja vidhi (rituals), and fasting timings for this spiritually significant occasion.

Putrada Ekadashi 2025 Date and Muhurat

As per the Hindu panchang:

  • Ekadashi Tithi Begins: 4 August 2025 at 11:41 am
  • Ekadashi Tithi ends: 5 August 2025 at 1:12 PM
  • Fasting Day (Vrat): 5 August 2025
  • Fast Breaking (Parana): 6 August 2025 from 5:45 AM to 8:26 AM
  • Dwadashi Ends: 6 August 2025 at 2:08 pm
  • Significance of Putrada Ekadashi

Also known as Pavitra Ekadashi, this fast is observed to seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu. Devotees believe that the vrat (fast) brings resolution to issues to progeny, helps in spiritual cleansing, and grants inner peace. The merit (punya) earned from this vrat is believed to absolve past sins and elevate the soul.

Putrada ekadashi puja vidhi (rituals)

Devotees should begin preparations from the Dashami Tithi (a day before Ekadashi).

  • On Dashami (4 August): Consume a sattvic (pure vegetarian) meal in the evening to prepare for the fast.

On ekadashi morning (5 August):

  • Wake up early, take a bath, and wear clean clothes.
  • Worship Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva in the home temple.
  • Offer incense (dhoop), lamp (deep), garlands, bael leaves, and flowers—especially aak flowers.
  • Present 16 Traditional Items Including Dhatura, Roli, and Naiivedya (Food Offering).
  • Offer tulsi (holy basil) to Lord Vishnu only—not to Shiva.
  • Recite the Putrada Ekadashi katha and conclude with aarti (devotional hymn).
  • Take a solemn vow (sankalp) in front of the deity to observe the fast.
  • Maintain a full-day fast. If total fasting is not possible, consume only fruits (phalahar).
  • In the evening, offer prayers again to Lord Vishnu.

On dwadashi (6 August):

  • Rise early and perform Vishnu puja.
  • Feed the poor or donate food to the needy.
  • Break the fast within the Parana Muhurat—between 5:45 AM and 8:26 AM.

When to Break the Fast?

The fast should be broken on 6 August 2025, during the Dwadashi Tithi, after sunrise and within the specified Parana time. Breaking the fast after this time is considered inauspicious.
