In a shocking incident, a woman lost her baby after delivery at a hospital in Maharashtra’s Washim district due to alleged negligence of the staff, officials said on Monday.
The grieving family has demanded that a case of culpable homicide be filed against the doctors and concerned staff of the hospital, alleging “inhumane" treatment of the pregnant woman during childbirth.
The incident took place on August 2, when Shivani Vaibhav Gawhane of Palsakhed was admitted to the Washim District Women’s Hospital at 3 am for delivery.
After her examination, the doctors said that the reports were normal and the delivery would take place by 10 am.
“However, despite severe labour pains throughout the night, and repeated calls to the nurses and doctors, no one paid any attention," officials said.
According to the family, no doctor or nurse came for a check-up from 3 am to 5 pm.
“At 5 pm, when the condition worsened, a check-up was finally done, but by then it was too late," the family alleged.
The family members further alleged that the mother was treated “inhumanely" during childbirth. “She was slapped on the cheek, her stomach was forcefully pressed, and she was examined by unqualified staff," the family alleged.
After the delivery at 5.30 pm, the doctors said that the newborn did not have a heartbeat and was declared dead.
The family blamed the hospital administration for negligence and demanded an investigation and strict action against those responsible.
Lata Gawhane, the mother-in-law of the victim woman, said, “Because of the doctors’ and nurses’ negligence, the newborn is dead. Our daughter-in-law was left in pain for hours," she claimed.
Dnyaneshwar Gawhane, the father-in-law, said, “We kept pleading with the hospital staff from morning till evening, but no one listened. The guilty must be punished."
