Co-creator Miles Millar shared the causes of the delay in a conversation with Collider. He stated that the three-year gap between seasons was due to the writers' strike and relocation of the production from Romania to Ireland.

Millar explained that the delay also resulted from production scale. He said over 3500 visual effects shots were created for this season, describing the episodes as movie-scale in terms of effort and complexity. He also noted that the production was still finishing visual effects until the final days before release.
