Liver pain: Is it on the left or right side? Understanding where liver pain occurs
If you’ve ever felt a weird ache in your belly and wondered whether it was your liver acting up, you’re not alone! Many people are confused about exactly where liver pain shows up.
Your liver sits mainly in your upper right abdomen, just under the rib cage, above your stomach. It’s a pretty big organ. It stretches mostly across the right side, but a small part reaches over the left too.
Liver pain: Left or right side?
Liver pain usually shows up on the right side of your abdomen. Discomfort, swelling, or a hard lump related to liver issues generally happens:
- Just below your rib cage on the right side
- In the upper right part of your abdomen
- Sometimes radiating (spreading) to your right shoulder or even your back.
If you feel pain on the left side, it’s probably not your liver. (There are other organs there like your spleen and stomach.) Of course, bodies are tricky, and pain can sometimes be “referred” or felt in odd places, but the classic spot for liver-related pain is the right upper abdomen.
What does liver pain feel like?
Liver pain might not be sharp, but more of a dull ache or throbbing feeling. Sometimes it’s just a general discomfort, bloating, or a feeling of fullness. People with certain conditions, like cirrhosis or hepatitis, might also get aches in their right upper back or even the right shoulder blade, but the “home base” is that upper right belly spot.
Some folks have no pain at all until the liver is badly damaged, but others get symptoms early. Besides pain, watch out for:
- Jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes)
- Swelling in the abdomen or legs
- Nausea and vomiting
- Unusual tiredness, loss of appetite.
When should I worry?
Anything like severe right-sided belly pain, especially if it comes with fever, yellow skin, or vomiting, means you should get checked out. Always see a doctor for pain that just won’t go away, especially if you have a history of liver problems.
Remember: Right side, upper abdomen, under the ribs is where your liver hangs out, and that’s usually where liver pain pops up. If you feel it somewhere else, your body might be trying to tell you something about another organ.
Other symptoms of liver disease
Liver disease isn’t always just about pain on your right side—there are other signs your body might be throwing out that are easy to miss. Feeling tired all the time? That’s a big one. You might also notice yellowing of the skin or eyes (yep, that’s jaundice), or dark-colored urine even if you’re well-hydrated. Some folks get itchy skin, swollen legs or belly, or unexplained weight loss. Nausea, loss of appetite, and feeling bloated after meals are also common. If you bruise easily or your stools are pale or greasy, that can be a red flag too. Mood swings and trouble concentrating might even show up if the liver’s really struggling. Liver issues are sneaky—so if something feels off for a while, don’t brush it off. It’s always worth checking in with a doctor to see what’s really going on behind the scenes.
