A 35-year-old Filipino tourist died in Hong Kong on Tuesday after being struck by a taxi outside a hotel in the Tsuen Wan West district, the Philippine Consulate General confirmed on Wednesday.
The crash occurred outside the Nina Hotel Tsuen Wan West where an 80-year-old driver reportedly lost control of his vehicle, hitting the victim before colliding with a wall, Philstar reported.
The tourist was rendered unconscious and later pronounced dead at Princess Margaret Hospital.
The deceased’s remains are now housed in Kwai Chung Public Mortuary, and the taxi driver involved in the accident is in police custody, Inquirer reported.
The Philippines is one of Hong Kong’s largest tourist markets, with an estimated 1.2 million Filipino visitors in 2024.
Some Hong Kong tour agencies have received inquiries from Filipino travelers about safety in the city following the accident, the South China Morning Post reported.
Hong Kong-based travel agencies catering to Filipinos, both in the city and abroad, said on Thursday that most of their clients understood the incident was an accident. None had received tour cancellations.
