Police In Bhubaneswar Accused Of Pushing Suicide Narrative In Suspicious Death Case

Bhubaneswar: Bharatpur police station in Bhubaneswar is back in news again for wrong reasons with a sub-inspector being accused of pushing a suicide narrative in a death case.

The deceased has been identified as Shiva Prasad Barik, a native of Jajpur district.

According to wife of the deceased, who was found hanging at a secluded spot at Pandakudia under Bharatpur police limits on Friday morning, the SI, whom she identified as Baikunthanath Behera, allegedly was in a hurry to conduct a postmortem through she had requested him to wait for other family members to arrive from Jajpur. “He dictated to me the FIR. I was told to write that my husband committed suicided and was mentally depressed after losing his mobile phone,” she told reporters.

She asserted that her husband was perfectly fine. “My husband had told me about a fight with some people. We were planning to go shopping today. We suspect that he might have been murdered and the body later hanged to pass it off as a case of suicide,” she added.

The incident took place when he was visiting his in-laws’ at Pandakudia.

Another relative said that there seems to be an attempt to suppress the matter. “It seems the police official has received a bribe or is being pressured,” alleged the deceased’s uncle.

The SI said that there is no allegation against him. “I will accept whatever they write,” he added.
