New Delhi: Pakistan faced West Indies in the first match of the three-match ODI series on Friday (August 8). The match witnessed the return of former captain Babar Azam to international cricket after almost five months. Babar is no longer a part of the T20 team and Pakistan did not play any Test match during this period. Despite this he played a brilliant innings of 47 runs while chasing the target of 281 runs. During this innings Babar surpassed Bangladeshs legendary all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan in the list of highest run scorers in international cricket. Babars ODI career statistics Babar Azam has so far scored 6282 runs in 129 innings in ODI cricket. He has an average of 55.1 and a strike rate of 87.82. He fell just three runs short of his 38th half-century but has scored 19 centuries so far. His performance in the first match against West Indies took him to a total of 14740 runs in international cricket breaking Shakibs record. This achievement is a testament to his consistent performance and brilliant batting skills. Babars record faster than Shakib Al Hasan Shakib Al Hasan who has not played for Bangladesh since October 2024 has scored 14730 runs in 447 matches and 491 innings in his career. He has an average of 33.86 which includes 14 centuries and 100 half-centuries. In comparison Babar Azam has crossed this figure in only 319 matches and 358 innings. He now has 31 centuries and 102 half-centuries to his name which shows his consistency and speed. Babar missed a big score in the first match Despite this Babar missed out on playing a big innings in the first match against West Indies. Pakistan achieved the target with 5 wickets to spare. Debutant Hasan Nawazs brilliant half-century was crucial in this victory. He became the 14th player from Pakistan to score fifty or more runs on ODI debut. Now Babar will play with the intention of giving Pakistan a series win by performing better in the next match.
