There is a possibility of a major change in Indian cricket. After handing over the command to the hands of the youth in the Test team, now there are indications that the time of change in the ODI team has also come. The upcoming Australia tour could prove to be the last series of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s ODI career. If this happens, it will be the beginning of an era in Indian cricket.
According to sources, if both players want to play further in ODI cricket, they may have to play in domestic tournaments like Vijay Hazare Trophy, as they had to do in the Ranji Trophy to maintain a place in the Test team. However, he had to retire from this format due to not being able to perform the expected performance in the Test.
Inner sources in the BCCI say that keeping in mind the selectors and team management 2027 ODI World Cup, they want to take the team forward with the young players. For this reason, Rohit and Kohli are being considered out of the next ODI plans. Both have already retired from T20 and Test cricket.
Although both have not yet announced retirement from ODIs, it is likely that the Australia tour to be held in October may be the last chapter of their career. The three -match series will feature competition on prestigious grounds like Perth, Adelaide and Sydney, where the performance of both players has always been impressive.
Rohit Sharma started his ODI career in 2007 and has scored 11,168 runs in 273 matches so far, with his best score 264 runs. At the same time, Virat Kohli made his debut in 2008 and scored 14,181 runs in 302 ODIs. His name is 51 centuries in ODIs, which is a record.
India played the last ODI against New Zealand on 9 March 2025, which included Rohit and Kohli. Since then, India has not played any ODI series. After Rohit and Virat’s farewell, the team will need a new leadership. Preparations are being made to advance young players like Shubman Gill, Ishaan Kishan, Tilak Verma and Rituraj Gaikwad.
October 19 – First match (Perth)
October 23 – Second Match (Adelaide)
October 25 – Third match (Sydney)
If Rohit and Virat choose this series as a farewell to their ODI career, then it will be a respectable conclusion of a glorious era of Indian cricket.
