Amid ongoing speculation regarding the future of prominent Indian cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in One Day Internationals (ODIs), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is not rushing to make any decisions. Their immediate attention is directed towards the T20 format, particularly the upcoming Asia Cup.
Following the cancellation of the Bangladesh tour scheduled for August, India's next ODI series will take place in Australia from October 19 to 25, featuring three matches. Kohli and Rohit have collectively amassed 83 centuries and over 25,000 runs in ODIs.
There is considerable discussion within Indian cricket circles about whether Rohit, who will be 40, and Kohli, who will be 39, can sustain their positions until the ODI World Cup in October 2027. A source familiar with the situation mentioned that if they have any plans, they will likely communicate them to the BCCI officials, similar to what they did before the England Test tour.
From the perspective of the Indian team, the next significant tournament is the T20 World Cup scheduled for February, and preparations for it are underway. The focus will be on sending the best possible team for the Asia Cup T20 tournament, with hopes that all players will be fit and available.
The BCCI is known for its cautious approach and typically avoids hasty decisions, especially considering the large fan bases of both players. They always aim to gauge public sentiment before making any sensitive choices.
Kohli and Rohit last represented the country in the Champions Trophy held in Dubai, where Kohli scored a century against Pakistan during the group stage, and Rohit played a crucial innings in the final.
Since the conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL), both players have not participated in any competitive cricket. Kohli, now residing in London, recently shared an Instagram story showing him practicing in an indoor net session, indicating that he has resumed training.
Rohit Sharma was on vacation in England after the IPL but has recently returned to Mumbai. He is expected to start training soon as well. Some media reports suggested that the BCCI might offer both players a farewell match on October 25 in Sydney.
However, an insider from the BCCI has denied these claims, stating that no discussions have taken place regarding this matter. The Vijay Hazare Trophy, a national ODI tournament, is set to commence on December 24, and prior to that, the Indian team is scheduled to play six ODIs.
After the Australia tour, India will host South Africa for a three-match ODI series in November. A source indicated that if Kohli and Rohit participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, they will first need to play six ODIs.
Between the ODI series against Australia and South Africa, India A and South Africa A will compete in three List A matches (50 overs) on November 13, 16, and 19 in Rajkot. The question remains whether this duo will want to play three List A matches or two before the South Africa series.
Moreover, the Vijay Hazare Trophy will run from December 24, 2025, to January 18, 2025, alongside three ODIs between India and New Zealand scheduled for January 11, 14, and 18. Therefore, if they participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, it is unlikely to exceed two or three matches.
