In a separate incident, last Friday, the lake of the glacier was suddenly flooded due to the breaking of the embankment of the lake. This flood shed a part of the strategically important Karakoram highway connecting Pakistan to China. According to the Pakistani newspaper ‘The Dawn’, the floods destroyed the protective walls and threatened dozens of houses and agricultural land.
According to officials, the flood was the most severe flood in Hasanabad Darya since 2018. It severely damaged the irrigation and drinking water supply of Alibad and the surrounding villages and the main road connectivity of the area was also broken. Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA) Assistant Director Zubair Ahmed Khan described the flood as extremely disastrous for the region.
The impact of floods was not limited to the Gilgit region. The Hopar Valley route in Nagar Khas was blocked, a bridge was washed away in Tokorkot village, and the only access route and embankments in the Shimshal Valley were badly damaged. Due to this, thousands of people in many areas have been deprived of drinking water and necessary resources.
Experts have warned that this year the melting speed of glaciers has increased due to frequent heatwaves and record-breaking temperature in the area. As a result, incidents like floods and landslides are now more frequent and intense, which threatens the stability and security of the entire region.
