An important step has been taken in Delhi to prevent cancer and initial identity. The National Association for Reproductive and Child Health of India (Narchi) and Sir Ganga Ram Hospital’s Institute of Obstate and Gynecology have trained more than 150 ASHA workers for early recognition and diagnosis of cervical and breast cancer.
The training took place at the 31st annual conference of Narachi held in Delhi from 8 to 10 August. The purpose of the program was not only to enable ASHA workers to recognize the symptoms of cancer, but also to make patients reach the diagnostic center, spread awareness in the community and also to remove fear and misconceptions to cancer. He was also trained in the use of tracking tools for records of suspected cases and follow-ups.
Dr. Mala Srivastava, president of Narchi Delhi Chapter, said, “Initial identity is likely to survive more than 90 percent of cancer, while this rate is less than 40 percent when late diagnosis. We can stop the disease before growing the disease by preparing Asha workers to recognize the early symptoms of cancer.”
He said that with this training, more than 150 ASHA workers will become ‘health watchmen’ in their community, which will reduce the deaths of cancer. Every year about 13 lakh new cancer cases occur in India and more than 8 lakh people die. The worrying fact is that only 20 percent of cases are detected in stage 1, when treatment is more effective.
Dr. Chandra Mansukhani, Vice President of Narchi Delhi Chapter said, “A trained ASHA worker can become a ray of hope in his community. The detection of cancer in Stage 1 makes treatment cheap, easy and more effective.”
With this initiative, more than one million people are expected to reach cancer awareness and screening in Delhi. In the next one year it will be launched as a pilot project in all districts, in which ASHA workers will organize screening camps in mohallas and schools. The progress of screening, referral and early diagnosis will be monitored from digital dashboard.
