The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has taken a big decision regarding board examinations. CBSE will now digitally evaluate the answer sheets of the 10th and 12th board examinations. One or more agencies will be selected for this. However, in this decision taken in the meeting of the governing body of CBSE, the members suggested that evaluation can be implemented in all subjects of 10th-12th only after the completion of pilot projects in some subjects in different regional offices of the board.

According to the governing body meeting minutes of CBSE, even before this, to reduce the time of evaluation of answer sheets and bring more accuracy in evaluation, CBSE had implemented digital evaluation for the 10th board examination under some of its regional offices in the year 2014 and for some subjects of the 12th board examination in Delhi in the next year i.e. 2015.

Experienced agencies will be entrusted with the evaluation work.

Now CBSE has decided that for the digital evaluation of answer sheets, such agencies will be selected that already have good experience in digital evaluation of answer sheets in examinations conducted by school boards, universities, or examination bodies controlled by the central/state government. Since the checking of copies of 10th and 12th board exams is a confidential process, it becomes necessary that the answer sheets are checked responsibly and without any rigging.

Rs 28 crore will be spent.

The estimated cost of the work of digital evaluation of answer sheets of board exams is said to be Rs 28 crore. The board official said that digital evaluation work is already being done in many universities, and it has proved beneficial. Its biggest advantage is that the inequality in the region-wise evaluation of answer sheets can be removed, which will further strengthen the examination process.

'Open-book' exam approved for class 9 from 2026
CBSE has decided to include 'open-book' assessment in class 9 exams from the academic session 2026-27. Teachers have also supported this assessment. This new system has been prepared on the basis of the National Education Policy i.e., NEP 2020. The main objective of this assessment is to test the understanding and analytical ability of the students instead of rote learning. Maths, Science and Social Sciences will be included in this assessment.
