In Uttarakhand, two individuals—a child and a woman—lost their lives due to rain-related incidents on Tuesday, while another woman went missing after being swept away by a seasonal stream. This information was provided by the state emergency operations center.
The meteorological department has issued warnings for heavy rainfall across the state in the coming days.
As a precaution, travel to Badrinath, Kedarnath, and Hemkund Sahib has been suspended until August 14. According to reports from the emergency operations center, a woman died when a vehicle was struck by falling rocks near Gholtir Shivnandi in Rudraprayag district, injuring four others.
In another incident, a nine-year-old boy named Aryan drowned in a swollen stream in the village of Darjana, Tehri district. The tragedy occurred around 2:30 PM while Aryan was crossing the stream with his grandfather when he slipped.
Authorities reported that a woman fell into a flooded stream in the village of Liwadi in the Mori area of Uttarkashi district after slipping. She went missing in the swift current while attempting to guide her livestock across the stream on Monday evening.
Upon receiving the report, police and the state disaster response team launched a search operation, but the woman, identified as 55-year-old Pratapi Devi, has not yet been found.
In light of the heavy rainfall warnings issued for all districts, schools up to the 12th grade in Dehradun, Uttarkashi, Nainital, Tehri, Pauri, and Champawat have been closed. The meteorological department has predicted continued heavy rainfall over the next three days.
A red alert has been issued for Bageshwar, Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Haridwar, Nainital, and Udham Singh Nagar on Wednesday and Thursday, while an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall has been issued for other districts.
With the forecast of heavy rainfall, the state emergency operations center has advised all district officials to take necessary precautions. The administrations of Dehradun, Champawat, Uttarkashi, Tehri, Pauri, Nainital, and Chamoli have declared school holidays up to the 12th grade on Wednesday.
The Rudraprayag district administration has halted the Kedarnath pilgrimage until August 14 for the safety of the devotees, while the Chamoli district administration has also suspended travel to Hemkund Sahib and Badrinath until August 14, along with a ban on trekking in the district until August 15.
