Irfan Pathan Throws A Dig At Rohit Sharma:Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has suggested that Rohit Sharma’s place in the Test side during last year’s Border–Gavaskar Trophy was preserved by his captaincy rather than performance.
Speaking in a video released by Lallantop, Pathan recalled interviewing Rohit during the Sydney Test — a match the opener missed after opting out, and said public politeness was mistaken for unwavering support.
Rohit, 37, endured a poor year in the format, managing 164 runs from eight Tests against Bangladesh, New Zealand and Australia, with a single fifty. On the Australian tour, he averaged 6.20 — the lowest by a visiting captain in Australia with a minimum of five innings.
Pathan added that broadcasters’ decorum required politeness when interviewing Rohit, but privately he and others acknowledged the lack of runs.
The Sydney Test, which ended the series, was played without Rohit amid speculation over his omission. While some believed he was dropped, Rohit stated at the time that the decision to sit out had been his own.
