Janmashtami 2025: The birth anniversary of Lord Krishna i.e. Janmashtami is going to be celebrated on 16 August. Preparations for this event continue with full swing. In many states of India, traditions and customs about Janmashtami are celebrated. Somewhere Dahi Handi is decorated at some places. Let us know where, how special it is Janmashtami.
Uttar Pradesh- The atmosphere of Janmashtami in this state looks unique. Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated with pomp in Mathura and Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh. In the famous temples of these places, the enthusiasm about the birth of Nandalala is seen. On Janmashtami, the Banke Bihari temple of Vrindavan is very beautiful decorated, which a large number of devotees reach to see. Many cultural programs from Dahi Handi are organized.
Maharashtra – This state of India Maharashtra has a different atmosphere on Janmashtami. The tradition of Dahi Handi is played on Krishna Janmashtami in Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra. In this tradition, a group called Govinda form human pyramids to break the handi hanging at height. Dadar and Lalbagh’s Dahi Handi of Mumbai is quite famous, competitions are held here.
West Bengal- The special atmosphere of Lord Krishna’s Janmashtami is also seen in this state. The festival of Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated as ‘Nanda Utsav’. On this occasion, devotees fast till midnight and when Lord Krishna is born, he breaks his fast. During Nanda Utsav, a special swing is decorated for the statue of Lord Krishna child form. Bengali sweets are also made here.
Gujarat- Janmashtami of Lord Krishna is celebrated with joy in this state. ‘Raas Leela’ is performed on Krishna Janmashtami, during which Krishna ji’s fickle conversation with the gopis is shown through drama. Traditional sweets like Churma, Regri and Mohanthal are prepared in the house and Kanhaji is offered.
Tamil Nadu- The atmosphere of Janmashtami is also found to be seen in this state. Gokulashtami is celebrated here and at the same time the devotees prepare various sweets and salty like ‘Sidai’ and ‘Murukku’. On the occasion of Gokulashtami, small footprints are made from rice flour on the path leading to the worship room. It is like a sign of God coming home. In this event, the pastimes of Shri Krishna are shown through tableaux.
