The Income Tax Department is using artificial intelligence-based processes to detect those taxpayers who have not given the correct information about their income and have not filed taxes accordingly.
In the last 4 years, the Income Tax Department has been successful in getting tax revenue of more than ₹ 11,000 crores by detecting such taxpayers and getting them to file updated returns (ITR).
Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, in a written reply in Lok Sabha on Monday, August 11, 2025, informed that by enhancing accuracy, uniformity, and integrity of data, AI-enabled processes have been used to strengthen the analytics framework and assist in the selection of appropriate cases for outreach."
He further informed that reporting of unpaid taxes through ITR-U has led to additional tax revenue of over ₹11,000 crore from FY 2020-21 to 2024-25.
The third eye is on you
AI is now detecting under-reported income in ITR filing. The tax department has also launched a 'nudge' campaign, under which taxpayers have been prompted to report their undeclared foreign assets by filing delayed ITRs. As a result of this campaign, over 5400 taxpayers filed delayed returns, leading to disclosure of foreign assets worth over ₹29,000 crore It happened.

According to the Finance Ministry, a total of 24,678 taxpayers reported their foreign assets and income in the revised ITR for the assessment year 2024-25. At the same time, 5,483 taxpayers filed belated returns reporting foreign assets worth ₹ 29,208 crore and foreign income of ₹ 1,089.88 crore.
